How much space do I need for a standing reception?

Updated October 2026 · How we answer

Short answerPlan for 6-10 square feet per person for a standing reception with some seating and tables. For a purely standing cocktail party, 5-6 square feet per person is typical, but 8-10 is more comfortable.

Space Per Person

The amount of space depends on the type of reception. For a standing cocktail party with no seating, allow 5-6 square feet (0.5-0.6 square meters) per person. This assumes people are standing and mingling, but it can feel tight.

If you include some seating, high-top tables, and a bar, increase to 8-10 square feet (0.7-0.9 square meters) per person. This gives room for people to move between groups and access food and drinks.

For a reception with a dance floor, add extra space for the dance area. A small dance floor for 50 people might be 15x15 feet (4.5x4.5 meters).

  • Standing only: 5-6 sq ft per person
  • Standing with some tables: 8-10 sq ft per person
  • Add 2-3 sq ft per person for a dance floor
  • Include bar and buffet areas in your total square footage

Other Considerations

Account for furniture: each high-top table (30-36 inches in diameter) takes about 10-12 square feet including standing room around it. A bar can take 100-200 square feet depending on length and queue space.

Check venue capacity limits: fire codes often specify a maximum occupancy based on square footage and use. For standing events, the code may allow 5-7 square feet per person, but always verify with the venue.

Traffic flow is key: leave at least 36 inches (91 cm) for walkways between tables and 60 inches (152 cm) near bars and entrances to avoid bottlenecks.

Common mistakes

  • Using seated dinner space calculations (10-12 sq ft per person) for a standing reception, which wastes space.
  • Forgetting to subtract space for bars, buffets, and dance floors from the total area before calculating guest capacity.
  • Assuming all guests will stand; many will want to sit at some point, so provide some seating.
