How do I plan a kids' table at a wedding reception?
Choose the right spot
Kids are happiest when they can see the action but are not in the middle of it. Put their table near a family table, away from the dance floor speakers and the bar. A spot near an exit or a restroom path helps if they need a break.
Round tables for four to six kids usually work better than long tables, because children can talk to each other more easily. Keep the table a little farther from the head table so the wedding party is not interrupted by noise.
- Four to six kids per table
- Kids' meals served early
- Activity kit and coloring supplies
- One adult nearby for supervision
Make it work
Plan simple food that is served quickly and is easy to eat, such as chicken tenders, pasta or a kids' plate. Ask the caterer about meal timing, since kids often need to eat earlier than the adult dinner. Place a crayon set, activity book or small game at each seat.
Let parents know ahead of time where the kids' table is, so invitations and the seating chart stay consistent. If a parent wants to sit with the children, put that seat at the kids' table or right beside it.
Common mistakes
- Putting the kids' table right next to the speakers, where it gets too loud.
- Scheduling kids' meals at the same time as adult courses, which leaves them waiting.
- Forgetting to add the kids to the seating chart, so they get placed at random.
