What is a simple first step for planning a party at home?
Count the guests first
A realistic guest count tells you how much seating and food space you need. Ask for a rough yes or no from each invitee, and expect some people to say maybe. Use the count to decide whether the party fits in your main living area or needs a second zone.
- Estimate guests with a simple yes or maybe list
- Decide whether the party is seated or standing
- Note the start and end times
Map the three main zones
Most home parties need a food area, a drink station, and a place to sit or gather. Put the food away from the main doorway so lines do not block traffic. Keep the drink station near a counter and away from electronics.
Check the space with tape
Use painter's tape on the floor to outline tables, couches, and the food area at full size. Walk through the outline to see whether people can move comfortably. Adjust the furniture before the day of the party, not during it. Keep a short checklist for the week before the party, and add anything that comes up during planning so nothing gets missed.
Common mistakes
- Inviting more people than the main room can handle comfortably.
- Putting the food table directly in the entry path.
- Waiting until the day of the party to test the layout.
