How do I plan a lounge area at a party?
Choose the right spot
A lounge works best in a quieter corner of the room, away from speakers and the dance floor. Place it near a wall or window so the furniture does not block traffic. Keep it close enough to the bar that guests can grab a drink without a long walk.
Group seating into conversation clusters of three to five chairs or a couch with two armchairs. Leave gaps between clusters so guests can move through the space.
- Corner or side of the room, away from speakers
- Clusters of three to five seats
- Low tables for drinks and small plates
- Soft lighting such as lamps or string lights
Furniture and comfort
Rent or borrow sofas, lounge chairs and side tables that fit your guest count. Plan roughly one seat for every three or four guests if you want most people to sit at once. Add a few standing spots near the edge for people who prefer to mingle.
Throw blankets, a few pillows and simple decor give the area a relaxed feel. If you want candles, check the venue rules about open flames first.
Keep the flow working
Mark the lounge on your floor plan with a clear boundary, such as a rug or a row of low planters. Make sure a server or host can reach the area without stepping over cables.
Common mistakes
- Placing the lounge in the middle of the room, where it blocks traffic.
- Setting up too few seats for the number of guests who want to sit.
- Forgetting a power outlet for lamps or charging stations.
